Sapphire has a high optical transmittance, so it is widely used 

as dielectric material for microelectronic tubes,ultrasonic conductive

elements, waveguide laser cavities and other optical components,

used as infrared military devices, spacecraft, high-intensity lasers 

and optical communications window materials.
